Birthday Drinks II
March 2, 2006 at 6.37 pmLast Thursday, I headed out for proper birthday drinks. Proper, as it was actually my birthday!
Anything Goes!
First, though, I shall go back to Wednesday, when I went to see Anything Goes at the Garrick. Linden was being a dancing girl in it, y’see.
I wasn’t all that impressed, unfortunately. Despite some decent performances, it all dragged a bit. One of those shows that was really a few good songs strung together with decidedly iffy plotty bits.
The dancing girls, however, provided some amusement due to their HORRENDOUS costumes! Linden’s actually quite an attractive girl, but you’d never know it once she put on that shapeless monstrosity. Not that she’ll thank me for pointing that out, of course!
Drinks at the bar were, as always, good, with a fine pint of Thwaite’s on offer. Our group comprised Pete, Rosy, Alison, Adam, Justin, Frankie, Sam and me, and Chinnery turned up as well. Skulking in the bar as well were a whole bunch of Garrick folk who I know through panto. It was nice to have a chat with them, and the two Paulas even sang me happy birthday. Which was nice.
Birthday!
So, I meandered home and headed straight to the kitchen for a snack. It was almost midnight by this point.
A few moments later, the door opened, and Jonathan (Housemate Helen-the-Taller’s boyfriend) walked in clad in nothing but a towel. As such, he was the first person to wish me a happy birthday on the day. Not quite what I had in mind!
So, I sent the obligatory txt msgs to Josephine, James and Ross, made a superb bacon sarnie, and ate it before opening Linden’s card (thanks!) and heading to bed.
I awoke a few hours later, got ready for work, and chanced up two packages in the living room - my housemates had bought me a big box of random ales, and the 24 Season 1 DVD boxset! Perfect!
So, to Thursday evening. Let the drinking begin!
Unfortunately, it started with a can of Special Brew (and more here), which was the pride and joy of my housemates’ efforts. Not good. I drank as much of that as I could in a short time period, gagged muchly, and headed off with Housemates Lynda and Helen (the Smaller), plus Dimitri (Helen’s bloke).
Ross (who was born exactly one year after me) had organised drinks in The Didsbury (which I’ve just found out is run by "Paul and Paula" - hopefully siblings rather than a couple!), so I tagged along, and lots and lots of people turned up.
I think we got between thirty and forty people there, which really isn’t bad for a Thursday night. There’s no way I can list them all, but it was GREAT. I got bought lots of drinks. Which was nice. The starter was, as per Ross-and-Mahinda tradition, tequila slammers for the pair of us. Class.
As befits a night that starts off with Special Brew and tequila, I got a wee bit drunk.
Closing time beckoned, so a bunch of us headed to Font to find the MUGSS crowd. My memory is pretty hazy about anything from about then. I do know that a select few of us (Si, Mia, Pete, Rosy, Alison, me..? [Gareth and Jordan too, apparently]) headed to SubSpace for cheesy 80s goodness.
What I definitely DO know is that Pete, Rosy, Alison and I headed back home via a kebab shop. And that I got home far too late for a Thursday evening.
All in all, a pretty good birthday. I don’t think I’d been that drunk since the Thursday of the sailing holiday. Which I’ve still not written up yet!
