When is a Date not a Date?

January 23, 2006 at 1.32 pm

I went out for a drink a while back, with a girl I quite like. I didn’t know whether it was a date, but I was rather hoping it would be.

Unfortunately, I still don’t know whether it was a date…I’m guessing that that’s a bad sign.

It’s that grey area, I think. I’ve got many female mates who I’d not think twice about nipping out for a cheeky pint with*…but the girl in question isn’t one of them. She’s a friend alright, and someone I’ve known for a while, but she’s not someone with whom I’d ever just nipped out for a pint before.

* Yes, I know that’s a dangling preposition, but I don’t care!

It’s not that it went badly…just not particularly well, I suppose. That’s looking at it as a date, of course - as “a drink with a mate” it was just fine.

I suppose that’s the problem with “dating” a friend.

I suspect that the girl in question is going to become a more regular pub-time acquaintance…but it’s not going to be any more than that.

Which is a shame.
